AARP responds favorably to stimulus bill

After Congress passed the $787 economic stimulus package, an AARP official from Pennsylvania released a statement calling it "landmark legislation" that would assist retired persons and elderly people during the poor economy.

Dick Chevrefils, state director of AARP Pennsylvania, said the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 would be a way to "jump start" the ailing AARP responds favorably to stimulus bill

"The bill contains many provisions that we believe are paramount to promoting economic growth, assisting those most affected by the economic crisis, and providing the foundation for meeting critical needs, such as health care and the development of livable communities," Chevrefils said.

Among some of the provisions included in the bill are: a $250 payment for eligible senior citizens and retired people, an increase in Medicaid spending, an increase in funding for Social Security and an increase in unemployment benefits.

Seniors can also look forward to a Weatherization Assistance Program, which is designed to help older couples reduce their energy costs.
President Barack Obama is expected to sign the bill tomorrow during a stop in Denver.

While those in retirement living communities generally have their 9-digit Social Security number handy for retirement benefits and Medicare registration, a team of researchers says that they should be wary about using the numbers as a form of identification in other situations.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University say that the predictability of how SSNs are distributed can make it easier for criminals to narrow down, based on their ability to guess someone's number based on their date of birth and where they registered.

How seniors and retirees will get their stimulus money Monday, February 23, 2009

When President Barack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act recently, he made a commitment to offer certain sections of the population a tax break, such as senior citizens who currently receive Social Security payments.

But when and how will that money get to them?

According to the legislation, $81 billion is going towards Protecting the Vulnerable. Part of this money will go towards a one-time payment of $250 to people on Social Security, Railroad Retirement and Veteran's Administration benefits, as well as government employees who do not receive Social Security.

The tax break will go to people with little or no income, Kiplinger.com reports.

People who receive their retirement benefits will receive the one-time payment in the same manner.

Final version of stimulus package benefits Social Security Friday, February 13, 2009

There's some good news for senior citizens in the final version of the much-debated $789.5 billion economic stimulus package, which was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives this afternoon.

The compromise worked out by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate gives the Social Security Administration $1 billion in funding, which will translate to some senior citizens receiving a little extra cash and new computers within the department.

Seniors who collect Social Security and who do not qualify for the package's tax credits because they do not work, will receive a one-time $250 payment.
