AARP responds favorably to stimulus bill

After Congress passed the $787 economic stimulus package, an AARP official from Pennsylvania released a statement calling it "landmark legislation" that would assist retired persons and elderly people during the poor economy.

Dick Chevrefils, state director of AARP Pennsylvania, said the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 would be a way to "jump start" the ailing

AARP responds favorably to stimulus bill economy.

"The bill contains many provisions that we believe are paramount to promoting economic growth, assisting those most affected by the economic crisis, and providing the foundation for meeting critical needs, such as health care and the development of livable communities," Chevrefils said.

Among some of the provisions included in the bill are: a $250 payment for eligible senior citizens and retired people, an increase in Medicaid spending, an increase in funding for Social Security and an increase in unemployment benefits.

Seniors can also look forward to a Weatherization Assistance Program, which is designed to help older couples reduce their energy costs.
President Barack Obama is expected to sign the bill tomorrow during a stop in Denver.
