Modern day retirement is no longer about getting out a pipe and putting on some comfy slippers, one sector commentator has claimed.
According to a spokesperson for the charity Age Concern, today’s retiree is more likely to go out and enjoy all of the things they were unable to while they were still working.
Commenting on the UK government’s compulsory retirement age, she noted that while some Britons were happy to know the age at which they would stop working, for others they may wish to stay in employment on a part-time basis or with a reduced responsibility.
For other individuals, a completely new career path was what they wished for, she added.
"[Over-65s] either want to do something totally different, they might want to work part-time or set up their own business but unless this law is changed they won’t have the right to look for other work," the representative concluded.
According to research published by AEGON, the pensions, protection, investment and advice company, retirement living in the ‘noughties’ is becoming a second adolescence and is more likely to include flexible working or a new career, than a carriage clock.
