Older persons could save up to £500 per year by searching online for deals on products and utility services, but recent research shows many may not be taking advantage of web-based shopping.

"Our research shows how easy it is to save nearly £500 by buying your products online," Steve Sweeney of moneysupermarket.com told the Daily Telegraph. "The discounts available online for insurance Online deals could aid retirement living budgets in the UK , and the savings from opting for an internet-based energy account, are huge."

But nearly two-thirds of older persons in the UK have never been online, and that could mean paying more for services, notes the newspaper.

Nancy Johnson of Age Concern concurs, saying that being online is now "a necessity to ensure you get the best information and the best deals," and that the government should increase the number of classes for pensioners and promote them.

Age Concern and other agencies offer training courses for older persons who want to learn how to use internet services, and the free sessions may help those looking to save money and utilize email or other programs.

For most families, letting "the elephant" sit in the room seems to be the accepted approach to financial matters. In some cases, such expenses lead seniors into debt, resulting in much needed financial support from their adult children.

Income generation for retirement living is doubted by some Wednesday, October 28, 2009
Mention the word 401k to someone debating what steps to financially secure retirement living income, and they may offer one of two responses: frustration at the decrease in value caused by the global economic downturn, or a general belief that if they put money away that it will pay dividends.

Both attitudes are key to understanding that non-guranteed income may not be a perfect choice for some investors, boomer blogger Carol Orsborn writes for the Huffington Post.

Estate planners say retirement living savings plans will experience change in 2010 Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Planning for retirement living budgets can be a struggle for some who find tax codes and legislation confusing, and a college professor is hoping to change that at an upcoming event in Minneapolis.

"What happens in the next few months could cause some of the biggest changes we've seen in the trusts and estates field," said Roy Adams, Northwestern University professor emeritus of estate planning and taxation.

He'll be speaking at the city's convention center on September 14 to help seniors and those planning their retirement living expenses by teaching estate planners what the changes will mean for both them and their clients.

A variety of tax code modifications may affect seniors' savings, including the repeal of the estate tax in 2010, as well as gift tax modifications that could affect those looking to give some of their prized possessions or family-owned companies to loved ones.

The government is also changing the income limits on certain types of IRAs, and Adams will join Professor Christopher Hoy in explaining their impact at the free event.
