With Father's Day just around the corner, one inexpensive gift to a dad who wants to maintain a modicum of independent living is to offer help with household chores or maintenance.

Mobility problems and other concerns for men who are in retirement living communities tend to be downplayed because of societal roles taught early on, according to researchers at the University of Cincinnati and the Medical University of South Carolina.

"We see many elderly men needing the most help but they are the last to ask for it," says Peter Ross, CEO and founder of home care provider Senior Helpers. Father's Day gift of assistance could help prolong independent living style "An elderly man could be suffering from deep depression or a physical ailment, but he's too proud to seek assistance."

By appealing to an older man's desire to solve problems, Ross says that the potential effect on a retirees ego is lessened, and the father and son can work together to find solutions while maintaining the father and son dynamic.

One possible fix-up could be adding fire prevention measures in dad's home, according to researchers from SINTEF Norwegian Fire Laboratories who say that the elderly have an increased risk for severe injuries if their home is ablaze.

Fuel plays an increasing role in independent living budgets, report says Friday, August 28, 2009
The cost of heating one's flat in an independent living scheme has gone up, and some charities worry that as winter approaches, old age pensioners may be facing difficult choices between their health and their hearth.

Age Concern says that reports over the past five years have demonstrated a continuous increase in the price of heating older people's homes, with the less affluent spending 40 percent of their income on food and fuel, after housing costs.

"Shockingly‚ the report finds that while poorer pensioners are spending more of their available income on energy‚ they are - at the same time - reducing the amount of energy they buy," said Andrew Harrop, Age Concern head of public policy.

Floor product could reduce impact of falls in retirement living communities Friday, July 17, 2009
New retirement living communities may be designed to incorporate a product that its inventors hope will reduce the impact of elderly people falling - literally.

A new floor tile may improve the outcomes of unstable seniors who fall by transitioning from a rigid surface to a more pliable one during sudden impacts, according to Sorbashock officials.

They say that the ability of the tile to cushion seniors who fall will lessen the number of hospital stays and medical costs associated with the elderly, including bone fractures.

More specifically, "the benefit of the technology is that it retains its solid feel and remains stable during normal activities," said Sorbashock president Sam Simonson.
