Mobile and online services could make caring for older persons more efficient

A report recently published in the UK claims wireless healthcare services could relieve some of the responsibility placed upon the healthcare and social care providers that look after older persons.

Peter Kruger is an analyst at Wireless Healthcare, a company that enables care providers to deliver their services to patients using wireless technology, according to its website. In his report entitled Alpha Moms, Alpha Daughters and Mobile Health he says that equipping the relatives of elderly people with mobile phone based healthcare services could be an important development in eldercare.

Mobile and online services could make caring for older persons more efficient

The alpha relative is comfortable using technology and thus capable of managing the care of their elderly relatives using online resources, says Kruger. This could include monitoring vital signs and medication intake remotely from a handheld device or computer.

"There are already up to 30 million potential alpha daughters, providing some level of care for their parents in the U.S. today," says Kruger.

The analyst says the baby boom generation will soon become the elderly population of the U.S. and that they could make mobile health a big consumer market.
