Future retirement living worker lives the life of residents

The "try before you buy" philosophy doesn’t just extend to potential residents of assisted living facilities’ one graduate student spent two weeks at a nearby nursing home to see what life was like for residents.

Benjamin Schiano is working towards certification as a licensed nursing home administrator this fall, but wanted to experience the same things that potential residents would so that he could develop best practices.

When he said it would be nice to live in the facility he was interning at for a while, his supervisor took him up on the offer, and he stayed for two weeks.

"When you think of nursing homes you don’t usually think of high-end amenities, but that’s what I discovered," the 22-year-old said.

Future retirement living worker lives the life of residents With wireless internet access and flat-screen TVs, "this is way better than my college dorm room," he added.

Research from consulting firm My Innerview suggests that older residents are happy as well, with more than one-third of them rating their assisted living facilties as excellent. The number has steadily increased for the past several years, the company noted.
