Many older persons with dementia eventually have difficulty carrying on with their daily lives, as the disorder often affects their intellectual and social abilities.

By 2029, more than one million people in the UK will have dementia, according to the BBC. However, some experts believe few people are taking the issue as seriously as they should.

"We cannot continue to brush this problem under the carpet, and only by improving vastly our standards of care and our investment in research can we ever hope to end the growing misery dementia causes now and in the future," Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, told the news source.

The Alzheimer’s Society says Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, currently affects roughly 417,000 people in the UK. Dementia is progressive, meaning its symptoms worsen with time. Signs of the disorder include loss of memory, mood changes and communication problems.

Unfortunately, most forms of dementia cannot be cured, according to the Alzheimer’s Society. However, there are drugs that can temporarily alleviate its symptoms.
