Social Security Earnings Limit Repealed

The Senior Citizens' Freedom to Work Act, a bill signed by president Clinton on April 7, 2000, repeals the $17,000 Social Security earnings limit on workers between the ages of 65 and 69. Seniors who continue to work past retirement age are now entitled to full Social Security benefits no matter how much money they earn.

With increased longevity there is a higher number of diseases or conditions that co-exist, also known as co-morbidity. Each condition is associated with a drug treatment and as the number of medications increase, so does the risk for developing an adverse medication event (AME). Fact: While America's senior society (over age 65) comprises only 13% of the population it uses 35% of all medications dispensed, and 21% of all hospital admissions are related to adverse medication events (AME’s), of which 50% are thought to be preventable. This article outlines key points to help minimize the risk of developing AME's for individuals over the age of 65.

Doctors Reluctant to Tell Terminally Ill How Long They Have Left

According to the New York Times, a recent study indicates that doctors often knowingly provide terminally ill patients with inaccurate assessments of life expectancy.

The study, conducted by the Soros Foundation Project and Robert Wood Johnson Scholars Program, in conjunction with the National Institute of Health, found that less than 40% of doctors would offer an honest estimate of how long they expect a terminally ill patient to survive.
