The Methodist Home of the District of Columbia (MHDC) is a unique non-profit retirement community offering a continuum of care. Assisted living, nursing, rehabilitation, and medical health services are provided in an intimate family-like setting at an affordable monthly cost- with no entry fee. The Methodist Home first opened its doors on an April morning in 1889, providing for seven senior members of a Methodist Episcopal Church in the District of Columbia.

Knollwood opened its doors in 1962 following a groundbreaking ceremony by Mamie Eisenhower. This unique community was the result of the dedication of two special women, Mrs. Maxwell Taylor, the wife of then Chief of Staff of the Army, and Mrs. Hoy Davis.
