Assisted living is a housing alternative for active senior adults. It is a totally different kind of care program from that found in a licensed nursing facility or a skilled nursing center. By adding personal and health care services to a residential environment, assisted living centers enable frail individuals to remain independent and to avoid institutionalization for as long as possible. Offering community living and minimal supervision, assisted living provides the solution for the active senior who should not be living alone.
Most assisted living residents are women in their mid 80's who need assistance with the activities of daily living--primarily bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility, and medication management or other personal care that requires the help of a trained caregiver, but not necessarily of a licensed nurse. Assistance is often required for housekeeping, shopping and transportation.
