When Mark and his adult daughter, Susan, toured Barclay Friends, the first thing they noticed was the friendliness of the staff and residents. Everyone they met was genuinely happy to welcome them and tell them about life at Barclay Friends. They learned that Barclay Friends was an affiliate of The Kendal Corporation and that serving older adults in the Quaker tradition was reflected in the manner of care provided to honor the spirit, humanness, and basic rights of each older person.
Their tour guide explained that Barclay Friends offers a full continuum of care providing Residential and Assisted Living, Rehabilitation, and Nursing Care in one community. Hospice and Respite Care are also available. Woolman Residential and Assisted Living residents can usually be accommodated in the Cotter Nursing neighborhoods as the need arises. They do not face the uncertainty or the ordeal of searching for a new care facility, but may remain in the community that is already their home.
Mark and his daughter were happy to learn that couples with differing care needs may live in the same community, receiving health care services according to individual needs. Apartments in the Woolman building can accommodate those needing either Residential or Assisted Living. This was particularly appealing to them as Mark’s wife, Nancy, already requires some assistance. In addition, resident's families are considered an important part of the Barclay Friends extended family. Especially attractive to Susan is that the Administrative staff listens openly and works actively to find solutions to resident or family concerns.
While enjoying a meal in the Turks Head Café, Mark and his daughter, Susan, learned how the Dining Service program enhances the lifestyle of each resident. Three delicious meals and snacks are provided daily. Residents enjoy waited service for the dinner and supper hours with entrée selections for each meal and guests are always welcome in both dining rooms.
When touring the lovely gardens, Mark and Susan were impressed with the number of pleasant places where the beauty of nature can be appreciated. They were also pleased to learn about the emphasis on Cultivating the Arts and Gardens that focuses on providing opportunities for music, dance, theater, the creative arts and horticultural therapy in the lives of Barclay Friends’ residents. Additional recreational programs include physical fitness, trips to nearby communities, games and holiday celebrations. Generations on Line TM, a software program that enables residents to email family members, answer questions posted by school children, and access to the Internet, is available on site.
Should the need arise in the future, Mark and his daughter were interested in knowing that Alzheimer's care is a special area of concern and expertise for Barclay Friends. Barclay Friends’ many years of experience in providing superior care with minimal restrictions to residents with dementia is widely recognized. Providing excellent care without the use of restraints is a hallmark of Barclay Friends' philosophy.
After their tour, Mark and Susan were eager to share the information about Barclay Friends with Mark’s wife, Nancy, and to tell their friends about this exceptional community where Mark and Nancy could continue to live together and secure their future care needs.
