Throughout the day, our professional fitness staff leads a variety of land- and water-based exercise classes for all fitness and mobility levels. "Water Dynamics" and "Bodies in Motion" are a few of the classes to help residents use major muscle groups, increase heart rates, raise metabolism and improve flexibility and range of motion. The fitness center staffers teach residents how to use the exercise equipment, encourage them with tips on form, and help them track their performance. All the classes promote a high level of independence and camaraderie among participants. The Kimble Fitness Center also includes a billiards room and the James Room -- a beautiful multi-purpose room (complete with a full kitchen) for parties, meetings and classes. Presbyterian Homes offers one of the most comprehensive physical therapy programs in the area. Physical therapy professionals use the warm water pool each week for rehabilitation. A total joint replacement program was developed in conjunction with two local hospitals to encourage the use of water therapy. The building was designed to meet the needs of an older population, and the pool is also accessible by ramp and hydraulic lift. This is a comfortable, well-appointed community, located in a quiet, residential neighborhood. King Home is just an easy walk to downtown Evanston, where residents can take advantage of restaurants, the library, movie theaters, transportation and shopping. The lake and many beautiful parks are close by. The residents enjoy cozy one-bedroom suites with full baths. Services include weekly housekeeping and linens. There's a handsome dining room, comfortable lounges for relaxation, cards and billiards, even a barbershop on the premises. Programs and social events - including golf, ball games, lectures and concerts - all promote a strong sense of community and companionship among the residents. The King Home has embraced a philosophy of interacting with residents called person-centered care. We agree to honor the choices, preferences and abilities of all residents. Basic values of person-centered care include “know each person” and “put the person before the task.” An expected approach to nursing home care has been devotion to rigid routines, where residents are expected to fit into the institution’s schedule. This often conflicts with a resident’s desire to continue to be the individual he was prior to moving to long-term care. Person-centered care requires us to know what residents want and build our schedule around their desires. Person-centered care requires King Home staff members to listen carefully for resident preferences and desires. We try to avoid saying “we don’t do it that way here.” Rather, our goal is to think: “Could we possibly do this?” or “I think we could work it out.” Flexibility is key.
