Franconia, NH looking for in home care for 98 year old stubborn mother Can't Post Private Reply

My mother is 98. Up to this time we have supported her in her desire to remain in her home until she dies.

We've discovered that her basement has a very moldy smell. After asking her permission we planned to have old mattresses and tons of old cardboard boxes removed, all was set, she seemed fine about it and then suddenly I got a phone call from her (actually a series of messages on my machine) cursing at me and accusing me of not loving her and plotting against her. I'd never heard my mother curse.
My brother who is 13 years older than me has just fallen and broken his hip, which leaves me, except that Mom has told me to stay away from her. Unsure
She cannot live alone. She has macular degeneration and her sight is leaving her quickly. She has trouble walking. Her hearing is bad despite the best computer controlled devices we could get her. Her short term memory is practically non existent. And the mold will probably get into her lungs, not to mention the danger to her visitors.
We have a friend of hers coming in every day, twice a day to help her with errands and such.
We need to have someone come live with her full time. We need some way to get her to let us do things for her so she can stay in her home.
Is there anyone out there who can help me?

You can not force anything your mom does not want as long as she is alert and oriented to person, place and time and can pass a MMSE (Mini Mental Status Exam). If you fear that she is making unreasonable decisions that threaten her physical safety or the safety of another person, you can have a psychiatric evaluation done by your local PESS (Psychiatric Emergency Services Screening), but this will only get her hospitalized in a psychiatric unit IF they question her competence. IF she presents as alert and oriented and passes a MMSE, they will leave. But IF she is deemed incompetent by TWO psychaitrists, you can get guardianship of your mother, but this is very expensive and must go through the courts. Do you have POA by any chance? (Power of Attorney for your mom)
