By Clint Maun, CPS There are several good healthcare professionals in the workforce today, but an exemplary healthcare professional is worth his/her weight in gold- as the saying goes. Employees who perform at an exemplary level share several common characteristics. If you want to rise to the occasion, pay special attention to the following traits: Dependable. Being dependable in healthcare is critical. When employers and co-workers know you are dependable, it makes scheduling and workload distribution much easier and effective. Trustworthy. The employee who passes on confidential or sensitive information is a liability to every employer. Further, when problems arise involving losses, questionable activities, or other difficult situations, it's worth a lot to know you can be trusted. Manageable. There's little that makes life more difficult for an employer than an employee who is difficult to supervise. The exemplary employee knows that insubordination, "rocking the boat", and passive-aggressive behavior isn't good for anyone. An exemplary employee does the job as directed, and is skilled at communicating the merits of doing things a better way. Team-oriented. A team-based approach is critical to the success of healthcare organizations. An exemplary employee is one who works well with others to achieve one common goal. Engaged. Exemplary employees eagerly listen and participate in meetings, presentations, group discussions, etc. Further, engaged individuals actively support company processes and procedures, making them a great example for others. Upbeat. Employees who are moody and negative are difficult to be around and are more difficult to supervise. Exemplary employees are fun to be around because they have a positive attitude. They can put personal turmoil aside to focus on their job. By making a conscious effort to achieve the traits above, you will be well on your way to being an exemplary healthcare professional. It isn't necessarily easy, but you won't regret making the effort.
