It’s no secret, successful recruiting is a challenge, pitting retirement communities to compete for top candidates. Today, HR managers in senior housing and healthcare face a range of complex challenges in their search for the best and the brightest. One certainty is that the internet is the top search and recruitment method in the industry. In the past ten years, online job listings have increased by over three hundred percent while newspaper listings have decreased by more than forty five percent. Most professionals get their news, communicate, and do business online, gathering information or making announcements once reserved only for print (newspaper and classifieds). Employers are following job seekers online, because, the internet — - casts a wider net
- is more cost effective
- and saves time in the hiring process
Online recruiting through job boards provides major advantages over traditional methods because it is ten times more cost effective than newspaper advertising and creates a more positive employment branding. The major advantage is that the internet is less expensive (AND better on your budget) to find employees than hiring through traditional classified ads. A survey by employment research and publishing firm WEDDLE's (www.Weddles.com) concludes that fifty one percent of employers are now filling more than a quarter of their openings online and, in the process, reducing their dependence on expensive newspaper advertising. Online recruiting is easy-to-use and reaches a larger audience of candidates, enabling senior housing companies to present job openings to millions of qualified job seekers, locally or nationally. More than ninety percent of HR professionals and recruiters use the internet to attract new talent. Internet postings result in nearly fifteen times as many hires as the standard newspaper classified. Newspaper advertising, the use a good head hunter, or hosting career fairs are still excellent employment avenues for retirement companies, but the internet produces lower cost-per-hire. Also, the internet offers much more than lower cost-per-hire. Many senior housing and health care sites offer easy-to-use tools, sophisticated job posting and resume search capabilities, 24/7 online access from any job seeker’s computer, and more targeted, effective job descriptions. Online ads are more visible and run longer than in newspapers. Essentially — more bang for the recruiting buck. The benefits of searching online for employees need to be maximized by writing a compelling job description. An internet job posting must be unique, stand out, and intrigue readers. In my article, "Attracting the Best Eldercare Talent", I explain how to write attention-getting job descriptions. Here are a few highlights of that article. - Be creative and bold in your job title to attract attention
- Once you have their attention, make sure to keep it by creating a compelling description that describes what the person will be doing in his/her new role
- Choose the most accurate job category for the position
- Use keywords to attract people to your posting
- Include a salary range (postings with salary ranges get more responses than ones that do not)
- Make it easy for applicants to respond
After writing an attention grabbing job description, retirement HR teams must decide where to post their great jobs. The internet offers many options: - Monster.com
- CareerBuilder
- or a specialty (niche) job site
Retirement housing and senior services industries generally need to focus on the niche job sites or on an online classified industry association, saving time, filling jobs quicker, and saving money.
