A cherished amenity in the assisted living setting is the beauty salon and barber shop.

Convenience is the major consideration for an in-house retirement beauty salon or barber shop; because it’s practical for assisted living residents with mobility and transportation problems.

Providers of residential care recognize the importance of good grooming for their occupants; the old-fashioned ‘look good feel good’ philosophy that is popular throughout American society.

The beauty industry has come up with great innovations for assisted living facilities:
  • elevated sinks and shampoo bowls to accommodate people in wheelchairs
  • specialized shampoo tray drain boards for residents with reclining problems
  • hydraulic chairs
Most states license assisted living salons and barber shops under special conditions:
  • Beauty salons and barber shops are limited only to residents and are not available to the public
  • Services may be charged directly to residents or included as part of a package
  • The facility owner must obtain a state license
  • The facility must insure that the salon is supervised by a licensed hair stylist during hours of operation
Residents value beauty salons and barber shops; they are amenities retirement providers must consider for the well-being of their occupants.
