Laundry and Linen Management in the Retirement Industry

Laundry and linen management is a major concern in long term care, assisted living, CCRCs, and nursing care. Successful facilities develop strategies to distribute and maintain a large variety of linen and laundry — patient gowns, IV gowns, scrubs for attendants, nurses and doctors, bath towels, sheets, and pillowcases for hundreds of seniors and staff. Effective laundry and linen controls are needed to: - Verify that all linen is correctly marked and set on delivery carts for transport to resident rooms
- Develop an inclusive cost analysis for monitoring linen distribution
- Instruct laundry staff with proper policies and procedures
- Keep a record of unusable and lost linen
- Create a system for linen storage
Linen purchasing and distribution is such a major task for facilities that highly-specific linen management database systems are available for these communities. Many facilities use linen and laundry sub-contractors in conjunction with in-house staff. An outsourcing agreement needs to be worked out to outline the responsibilities between the two. Laundry and linen persists as an ongoing, labor-intensive area in long term care, assisted living, CCRCs, and nursing care. These facilities will continue to provide the best products and services to clients and staff, while finding ways to reduce costs.
