June 2010 Newsletter - No More Pencils, No More Books Can't Post Private Reply

June. All the long sleeve shirts and sweaters have been packed away. T-shirts, shorts and sandals appear. Summer 2010 is beginning. I was walking past a high school and I realized that June is the end of another academic year. Some teenagers are off to summer camp, others to summer jobs. Stored in the repository of my mind is a song: No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers’ dirty looks. But what is so dirty about the looks of teachers, if anything? But for teenagers, cooped up like hamsters in a cage for 10 months, teachers possess the aura of probing laboratory scientists. Past June, the hope is for the excitement and tranquility of summer, or the promise of a pay check. June is the red carpet to enjoyment and accomplishment.

On a deeper level, where are the pencils and the books? The advent of the PC, laptop and cell phone has shuttled the text bound student out of fashion. Print isn't dead – yet. But when I ride the subway I see a flower bed of paperbacks hidden behind a forest of wireless paraphernalia. We're on a ride. Let's stick together.

The June 2010 RetirementHomes.com features an informative read for the new summer:

. Technology for Aging Expert, Laurie Orlov, ushers in the marketing hoopla surrounding the iPad and announces a resounding success for Apple.

. Michael P. Sullivan of 50-Plus Communications Consulting provides telephone tips for older adults.

. Cindy Heilman, the CEO of Higher Standards, outlines how servers can ensure each resident or guest is having the best meal experience a community offers.

. Clint Maun, CPS, writes about surefire ways to publicize your healthcare organization's successful teams.

. Upcoming Events

I wish everyone a good summer – don’t worry about the dirty looks.

Enjoy!
