January 2010 Newsletter - Resolutions Can't Post Private Reply

January 1, 2010, I resolve to...

The January resolution is a tradition that depends on our willingness to do better and improve in the coming year. There's something mythical about these resolutions, that if we make them before the first day of the new year, we will somehow follow through. The reality is that New Year's resolutions are usually broken within the first few days or weeks of January and we revert back to our old patterns.

The fallacy lies in the belief that at the stroke of midnight, ushering in a New Year, our resolve will somehow be reinforced. The problem with New Year resolutions, as I see it, is that there's nothing special about January 1. It's better to see each day as a new day to resolve to be better; to improve. Each day is the start of a new year, another 365 days.

Plus, 365 days is too long, whereas one day is doable. Today's the day and tomorrow's the opportunity to start again. There's no use in worrying about tomorrow until it comes. By then it will be today.

Let's resolve to review how we did today...everyday, to see our little successes and failures; build on the successes and learn to accept failures as the inevitable imperfections of life. That's a resolution I can live by.

Enjoy!
