Chartwell Seniors Housing REIT is celebrating its fourth annual “Senior Star” competition on October 18th, 2010 at Toronto’s Carlu Hotel.
The competition has crisscrossed Canada’s Seniors Centres’, theatres and Chartwell residences and is open to anyone 65 and over, a Canadian resident, including non-Chartwell contestants. Senior Star was launched in 2007 in celebration of Chartwell's National Appreciation of Seniors.
Contenders proceeded through 64 Regional Competitions, adjudicated by a panel of judges, made up of musical experts, local government officials, and media representatives. The first place winners moved into a circle of ten competitors invited to compete in the Senior Star National Final, accompanied by the Laura Lynn Band.
What do the judges look for?
Dan Clancy, lead singer of LIGHTHOUSE and a National Final Judge, said in an interview: “Ultimately, we look for the complete package. All contestants have to be mindful that it’s about entertaining an audience; a balance of talent and performance appeal and how well one can deliver.”
The 2010 National Final Host is Canadian entertainment icon Dinah Christie. The National Final Judges include: Dan Clancy, of Canadian Super-group LIGHTHOUSE; Gordie Tapp, a Canadian Country Music Hall of Famer; and Tim Louis, popular Canadian Jazz pianist and singer.
“There is a scoring system in place,” said Clancy, “that covers all the unique skills sets and entertainment components we look for in a contestant.” He continued: “At the same time, it’s a subjective process based on each judge’s personal experience in the entertainment industry.”
“The response from the audience is delightful”, said Clancy, “and respectful of all contestants who perform. I look forward to this year’s Chartwell Senior Star 2010 National Final.”
