By Stephen Winbaum Chartwell Senior Housing REIT pulled out all the stops for its Senior Star competition on October 18, 2010, at the opulent Carlu auditorium in downtown Toronto. The 1300 seat Art Moderne auditorium on the Eaton's Seventh Floor was filled. Audience and celebrity judges responded with enthusiastic acclaim for all performers. Hosted by the talented Dinah Christie, the gala affair featured 10 finalists from across Canada, some of the best performers over the age of 65 in the country. Vic Johnston of Gravenhurst, Ontario was chosen Senior Star 2010 for his original composition and performance of ‘Dizzy Fingers’ a tour de force of intricate, quicksilver melody lines, harmonic progressions and metric patterns. Johnston originally played at The Carlu as a 10-year old student competing in a piano recital. 76-years later, he returned to the stage to dazzle the crowd with ‘Dizzy Fingers’.
2010 Senior Star Vic Johnston plays 'Dizzy Fingers'. “This was a superb experience and I thank Chartwell for the opportunity,” said Johnston. “Winning a prize is wonderful, but it was the enthusiastic response of the audience that gives me inspiration to continue.” He received a thunderous standing ovation from the audience at the Carlu. First runner-up Barry Greene belted out the Motown favourite ‘How Sweet It Is’ while playing electric guitar. Carmen Hill, wearing a magnificent red dress, performed the enchanting ballad ‘Never Never Never’ and was named second runner-up. It was a difficult decision for celebrity judges Gordie Tapp, Tim Louis and Dan Clancy, well-known performers who have made their own impact on the Canadian music and television industry. All contestants were deserving talents and Dan Clancy remarked that this Senior Star had been an incredibly difficult decision. Sixty regional competitions preceded the announcement of Vic Johnston's triumph. “This event matters to Chartwell because it allows seniors to break out of a mold that our society often puts them in,” said Brent Binions, President and CEO of Chartwell Seniors Housing REIT. “All of our top ten finalists are winners and they each did a tremendous job in their performances.” About Chartwell REIT: www.chartwellreit.ca Chartwell Seniors Housing REIT is committed to providing Canadian seniors with a safe and rewarding lifestyle in a residence they are proud to call home.
