August 2010 Newsletter - New Contributors Can't Post Private Reply

August. The climate cools and becomes unpredictable. Patches of rain. Dark clouds. It’s a quiet month. Orderly, with many of us taking time off for vacations. Trips to the cottage. The cabin. Camping out. It’s time to bring along summer reading. There’s magazines and books we’ve been meaning to relax with. Maybe a good mystery or a fun collection of short stories. A new translation of a dense Russian novel.

Some of us are moving to a new generation of reading – leaving print behind – for Kindle or iPad. Or we’ve outfitted our summer get-a-ways with Internet access to stay online and heighten our chill mode.

The world’s changing with the seasons. Witness new contributor Esther Surden’s article – My iPad: Essential, No; Fun, Yes, but Also Frustrating! I welcome Esther’s entertaining analysis of the Boomer generation as it come to terms with social networking and tech gadgetry.

Also, welcome to Lydia Miller, for her first contribution to the Newsletter – Marketing to Seniors. She’s a savvy, competitive expert in an area that demands proactive strategies.

August. It’s the linchpin connecting summer to fall, a passage when department stores are stocked with Back to School supplies. For now, it’s paper, binders, pencils and pens. Soon, the industry could switch over to virtual commodities – laptops, USB’s, online education – etc.

There’s always a generational push and pull. Long-time contributor, Michael Sullivan, returns to the 60s generation gap between Boomers and their parents, a gap that exists still in aging and retirement - Communications Barriers between Boomers and Parents.

Communications. Cindy Heilman writes about its goal in residential dining service - Scripting your Playbook for Winning with Dining Best practices. And Clint Maun astutely deals with how to keep meetings on track - Problematic Personalities at Your Meetings? How to Address Them.

Plus Upcoming Events.

Enjoy the end of the summer months – vacations, if you're due. Have a great read.
