Leave it to the Americans
I have long admired Americans for their sheer “can-do” attitude and the gutsiness of many of their endeavors. And so it is with the way Americans approach adult lifestyle communities.
Recently I saw a commercial for a project called “The Villages” on television and I was blown away by how extensive this project appeared to be. Currently The Villages is home to some 68,000 residents with plans in place for an eventual population of over 100,000. The Villages builds 4,500 homes per year right now, meaning that within the next four to five years the project will be complete.
The Villages is a self-contained community featuring unique town squares that offer shopping, dining, entertainment, healthcare as well as a full hospital. Recreational facilities host over 300 planned activities on a weekly basis. There are over 1,100 residents’ clubs and organizations ranging from an archery club to a HarleyDavidson club.
For the golf enthusiast, The Villages will seem like heaven as it offers a number of free executive courses, has eight championship courses and features a world-class senior golf instruction program that covers beginners to pros. In total there are 441 holdes of golf for residents to play
For those in need of entertainment, it just doesn’t get much better than life at The Villages. Billed as “Florida’s friendliest home town”, The Villages has a number of town squares that offer great entertainment as well as fine dining. At The Villages, residents enjoy special celebrations and parades, such as Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day and Oktoberfest. There are even sports teams that compete within The Villages for the championship and Villages residents can choose to be players, cheerleaders or spectators.
The community also has a number of recreation centers and swimming pools that cater to the exclusive enjoyment of residents of The Villages. In addition, there are social clubs, special interest groups, such as book and music clubs, arts & crafts, organized exercise programs to stay fit and healthy as well as dance, music and theater activities.
Located in Central Florida, about an hour’s drive west of Orlando, The Villages offers something for everyone. From patio villas to Vista Lago villas, from new homes to resale homes, The Villages has a home for every budget and every taste.
The community is divided into a series of small neighborhoods that belong to either the community of Spanish Springs or Lake Sumter Landing, each with its own vibrant “downtown” that offers the community’s commercial amenities. The Villages is a beautiful community that’s master planned to meet the needs of an aging population and is of a scale that we in Canada can only dream about.
