A Christmas tribute to the Greatest Generation

As we head into the Christmas season, I can’t help but think of the brave men and women who risked and gave their lives during the Second World War so that we might enjoy the right to celebrate our holidays and religious traditions as we desire. This truly is “the Greatest Generation” that selflessly ventured into foreign lands to rid the world of tyranny. It is through their efforts and selfless sacrifices that today we are able to enjoy the remarkable freedoms, which now we take for granted. I sometimes wonder if we as a culture are capable of appreciating all that was done on our behalf, as we have turned the Christmas holiday into a spending orgy and more and more, are scorning the public celebration of that holiday. As Christmas trees and Nativity Scenes are routinely deleted from public view for fear that we might offend others who do not celebrate Christmas, the meaning of that holiday becomes diminished. It’s good to be reminded sometime of how we got here, of what transpired to make our world what it is today and in doing so to recognize that our freedoms did not come to us without struggle. The Greatest Generation is likely the last to unabashedly celebrate Christmas as a holiday that has a deeper meaning, where the spirit of giving outweighs the desire to receive. It’s also sad to realize that this Greatest Generation is shrinking in numbers as our fathers and grandfathers begin passing from this life. It is a loss the significance of which we will likely not appreciate until they have passed into history. I think we all owe a debt of gratitude to the Greatest Generation and in the spirit of this special season I offer a deep and heartfelt “Merry Christmas”. Thank you and God bless. --- Klaus Rohrich is President and Creative Director of Taylor/Rohrich Associates Inc., a marketing and advertising firm that specializes in niche marketing retirement real estate developments http://www.maturitymarketing.com.
