In the wake of all the machinations about getting a comprehensive healthcare package through Congress in the US there will definitely be some negative repercussions for both the Democrats and the organizations that supported the legislation. One such organization is AARP, whose purchased support for the healthcare reform package currently working its way through Congress, has caused a revolt among a large number of older Americans, some of whom have gone so far as to form a new organization that offers an alternative to AARP. One such group is Generation America or “Gen-A”, a Texas-based organization founded by retired businessman Michael Young. Young is extremely concerned about the direction in which America is heading and as a result has decided to put his money where his mouth is by coming out of retirement to found this organization. “Health ‘reform’ was just the catalyst for me. Obviously, the current administration is dedicated to expanding the role of government control in our lives in many areas. My commitment to the free market system and to small, efficient government and personal freedom has been reignited by the unprecedented efforts to expand the government's role in our lives,” writes Young on the Gen-A website. (http://www.generationamerica.org/) The organization is committed to furthering “the founding principles of our Great Nation. We are committed to small government, low taxes, personal responsibility and FREE MARKETS. We are committed to the American Dream. We are committed to fight for these beliefs.” Gen-A offers a number of benefits to its membership ranging from discounts from its affiliated partners to special insurance programs to be introduced sometime this year. The cost of membership is $19.00 a year. The main purpose of Gen-A is quite similar to that of AARP as its website states below: Advocacy: We are the voice for those who have earned it. Generation America has spearheaded a mission to speak out in support of individual liberty and freedom for all Americans. Our team will work tirelessly to communicate our ideals and to fight for free- market solutions rather than government intervention. Member Services: Generation America is focused and committed to our members. Our primary goal is to bring added value through the best services and savings to our members. Over time as we grow we plan to create an incredible array of exciting services for our members benefit. Enrichment: Generation America’s Enrichment team works around the clock to bring a variety of unique enrichment programs that speak to our members’ values and beliefs, enhance their quality of life and foster their sense of community. Education: Generation America is committed to the development and promotion of an educational program designed around our nation's history, American exceptionalism, free market economics and the great success of our culture. As this program develops, we will keep our members and others informed with regular communication. Gen-A’s educational program is being designed to inform, celebrate American success and inspire our members. Generation America is committed to educating the youth of America on these same principles and we are developing a plan to bring age-appropriate programs to the school children of America. We believe that some of the more basic precepts of history have been lost through time and we have a commitment to prepare our youth to be the leaders of tomorrow. The organization thoroughly dispels the rumor that prospective members who tear up their AARP card and mail it to Gen-A will receive a free membership. “While that sounds like a tantalizing offer, we simply cannot afford to give away free or discounted memberships.” the Web site states. It’s entirely possible that Americans’ inherent resistance to big government will have far-reaching effects on more than just elected officials.
