Atherton Place is named after the late Dr. Lucious Atherton, a retired pharmacist who, while on the health system board of directors, had the idea of creating an independent and assisted living senior community in Marietta and Cobb county. Well Star Atherton Place opened in 1988 and has since become one of the state leaders in senior living. In fact, Atherton Place's Assisted Living program has been accredited by the Joint Commision on Accreditation of Healthcare organization.
