Retirement/Independent living in Alberta

I am a U.S. citizen, and I want to move to Canada. I am looking at moving to Lethbridge in an independent living center. Does anybody know if I can just go there and rent a place, and that's it, or do I have to register or something. I don't want to change citizenship (or maybe duel citizenship), but just want to live in Canada. I have a retirement pension, and I have free health care through the Veteran's Administration, so I could go across the border for health care. I wouldn't be taking any money or making any gain from the government in Canada. Any suggestions or advice on doing this? MariLynn

Since you are an American citizen, I think the government of Canada is not strict on a US citizen like you. But the I'm not sure if you can use your free health insurance there in Canada because your health care is usually for US hospitals only.
