Older Americans Month – May 2007 Can't Post Private Reply

May is the ideal choice for Older Americans Month. With spring comes renewal - flowers, budding trees, and the return of migratory birds.

Life is a transformation through a natural cycle. Aging is a process of maturation wherein individuals become more fully aware of their human capacity on a deep emotional level.

When President Kennedy designated Senior Citizens Month in May 1963, recognition was paid to the integral role of older Americans in society. In 1980, President Carter changed the name to Older Americans Month, to honor those aged 65 and older.

Older Americans Month signifies a vital chronicle for the American people, of a generation who created the world's most prosperous society.

May is the month of renewed vigor and vitality, befitting the over-65 crowd, and a welcome to an incoming growth of 83-million baby boomers who will become Older Americans from 2011 to 2029.

Like spring vegetation, the generation of Older Americans is growing and is reshaping the earth.

But with these changes come concern – a potential lack of long term care providers; increased health care costs; a shortfall in retirement accommodations and services to meet the demands of the baby boom. All of these unanswered questions leave policy makers wondering about the future.

Still, the outlook is assured by the proactivity of Older Americans, as embodied in the 2007 theme - “Older Americans: Making Choices for a Healthier Future.”

It's a future that will include the internet as an important search tool for senior housing accommodations, jobs, senior-related content and resources. As spring arrives, RetirementHomes.com is proud to be part of an online future for Older Americans, their families, and industry members, and to offer an internet advantage that will continue to flourish and evolve.
