A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. Staff is available twenty-four hours a day. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. Independent Living Communities enable residents to live as independently as possible, while providing certain services and social activities. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. A place in a retirement home can be paid for on a rental basis, like an apartment, or can be bought in perpetuity on the same basis as a condominium. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living.
