A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with activities of daily living. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. A place in a retirement home can be paid for on a rental basis, like an apartment, or can be bought in perpetuity on the same basis as a condominium.
