A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Independent Living Communities enable residents to live as independently as possible, while providing certain services and social activities. There is a wide range of home care services that can help you maintain your independence within the comfort of your own home, from in home help to day care. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. A place in a retirement home can be paid for on a rental basis, like an apartment, or can be bought in perpetuity on the same basis as a condominium. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with coordination of services by outside health careproviders.
