Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. A retirement home is a multi-residence housing facility intended for senior citizens. A place in a retirement home can be paid for on a rental basis, like an apartment, or can be bought in perpetuity on the same basis as a condominium. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Independent Living Communities enable residents to live as independently as possible, while providing certain services and social activities.
