The usual retirement home pattern is that each person or couple in the home has an apartment-style room or suite of rooms. A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. There is a wide range of home care services that can help you maintain your independence within the comfort of your own home, from in home help to day care. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with activities of daily living. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. You have a close network of nearby family, friends, and neighbors.
