Retirement Homes & Senior Housing
A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Independent Living Communities enable residents to live as independently as possible, while providing certain services and social activities. Housing arrangements for the future can be a stressful, anxiety-provoking topic for you and your family. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. You do not need to provide medical evidence that you need a minimum level of care. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with coordination of services by outside health careproviders. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time.
