Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. You do not need to provide medical evidence that you need a minimum level of care. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. You have a close network of nearby family, friends, and neighbors. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Assisted living is a philosophy of care and services promoting independence and dignity. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well.
