Retirement Homes & Senior Housing

A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but itís anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with monitoring of resident activities to help to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Retirement homes are also called retirement residences. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you donít need the round-the-clock medical care and supervision of a nursing home. The usual retirement home pattern is that each person or couple in the home has an apartment-style room or suite of rooms. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes.
