A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but itís anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with activities of daily living. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. Staff is available twenty-four hours a day. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities.
