More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Senior Housing - find independent and assisted living facilities, nursing homes, retirement communities, and other elderly care. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with monitoring of resident activities to help to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. A nursing home, convalescent home, Skilled Nursing Unit, care home or rest home provides a specific type of care for its residents. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you don’t need the round-the-clock medical care and supervision of a nursing home.
