Assisted living is a philosophy of care and services promoting independence and dignity. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you don’t need the round-the-clock medical care and supervision of a nursing home. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with activities of daily living. A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person.
