Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. You do not need to provide medical evidence that you need a minimum level of care. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. The usual retirement home pattern is that each person or couple in the home has an apartment-style room or suite of rooms. Assisted Living communities are regulated and licensed at the US state level. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. Retirement homes are also called retirement residences. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well. A nursing home may be a good choice if both medical and personal care needs have become too great to handle at home. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you need more personal care services than are feasible at home or in an independent living retirement community.
