Retirement Homes & Senior Housing
Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Independent Living Communities enable residents to live as independently as possible, while providing certain services and social activities. A place in a retirement home can be paid for on a rental basis, like an apartment, or can be bought in perpetuity on the same basis as a condominium. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. A retirement home is a multi-residence housing facility intended for senior citizens. There is a wide range of home care services that can help you maintain your independence within the comfort of your own home, from in home help to day care. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living.
