A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. A nursing home, convalescent home, Skilled Nursing Unit, care home or rest home provides a specific type of care for its residents. You do not need to provide medical evidence that you need a minimum level of care. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but itís anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Staff is available twenty-four hours a day.
