Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Housing arrangements for the future can be a stressful, anxiety-provoking topic for you and your family. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. A retirement home is a multi-residence housing facility intended for senior citizens. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with activities of daily living. A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person.
