Retirement Homes & Senior Housing

A retirement home is a multi-residence housing facility intended for senior citizens. A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well. The usual retirement home pattern is that each person or couple in the home has an apartment-style room or suite of rooms. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Staff is available twenty-four hours a day. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well. A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. A nursing home, convalescent home, Skilled Nursing Unit, care home or rest home provides a specific type of care for its residents. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities.
