A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but itís anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes. Assisted living is a philosophy of care and services promoting independence and dignity. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. A nursing home, convalescent home, Skilled Nursing Unit, care home or rest home provides a specific type of care for its residents. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Assisted Living communities are regulated and licensed at the US state level. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home.
