The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. Assisted living is a philosophy of care and services promoting independence and dignity. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living. There is a wide range of home care services that can help you maintain your independence within the comfort of your own home, from in home help to day care. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Retirement homes are also called retirement residences.
