A retirement home is a multi-residence housing facility intended for senior citizens. A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well.
