Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. Assisted Living communities are regulated and licensed at the US state level. There is a wide range of home care services that can help you maintain your independence within the comfort of your own home, from in home help to day care. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you need more personal care services than are feasible at home or in an independent living retirement community. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. Independent Living Communities enable residents to live as independently as possible, while providing certain services and social activities. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes.
