You have a close network of nearby family, friends, and neighbors. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with activities of daily living. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. Housing arrangements for the future can be a stressful, anxiety-provoking topic for you and your family. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Assisted Living communities are regulated and licensed at the US state level. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with monitoring of resident activities to help to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care.
