Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with monitoring of resident activities to help to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. A place in a retirement home can be paid for on a rental basis, like an apartment, or can be bought in perpetuity on the same basis as a condominium. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. A nursing home, convalescent home, Skilled Nursing Unit, care home or rest home provides a specific type of care for its residents. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given.
